Today I re-watched The Swan Princess. Now, I’ve had a very stressful day and I needed something fluffy to get my mood back up. In all honesty I think that’s the main purpose of this film. It’s not complex and full of notable plot twist or development, but it’s good to help you feel all warm inside and this comes from the almost sickeningly sweet relationship between our femme fatal, Princess Odete, and our dope in shining armour, Prince Derek.
The relationship between these two basically pops up in a matter of minutes. They both have widowed parents who decided the young couple would spend every summer getting to know each other until they agreed to marry. For years the two despise each other, often arguing, fighting and throwing things. However, within two minutes of seeing each other when they are around the age of 20 or so, they decide they are instantly in love… or at least Derek does.
Derek calls for an immediate marriage however Odete questions him, asking what he likes about her other than her beauty. This is were Derek makes an ass of himself and says that oh so famous line ‘What else is there?’ In all out honestly I actually liked Derek for saying this. It made him much more believable as a young man, not to mention he had constantly ridiculed Odete’s personality through out his childhood so having him suddenly profess to adoring her for everything she is would just have completely contradicted with the previous storyline.
Odete refuses the proposal and shortly after is kidnapped by one of her father’s old enemies. During the struggle Odete’s father dies and leaves Derek a weird and obscure clue about a creature that isn’t what it seems. We skip to a lake scene where Odete is now a swan by night, woman by day. Derek is the only one who believes her to still be alive. Personally this is where the film gets a little off in plot since Odete seems to have completely forget about repremending Derek for his insensitive comment and calls him the love of her life, even though she flat out rejected him. Plus Derek is exactly the same, even though it’s pretty much established he’s hooked on her looks. We’re not given an indication to how long Odete is gone but it’s been long enough for everyone else to consider her dead.
You’d think logically Derek could just find a Princess as pretty and move on. Unless his feelings were deeper due his summers with her as a child. However, this is never explored. We are simply told he has fallen utterly in love with her for no particular reason and will not give up. Odete then flies to Derek with the help of some of her new animal friends, but Derek attempts to shot her down with an arrow, mistaking her for the creature that attacked her father. He follows her to the lake and almost kills her until he see’s her transformation.
Now I haven’t really mentioned the bad guy alot. Basically he’s this wacked sorcerer who got banished and now wants Odete to marry him to legally inherit her father’s kingdom. He over hears Derek invite Odete to a ball were he will declare his un-dying love for her in front of everyone in an effort to break the spell. However there is no moon the next night meaning Odete will be stuck as a swan. So the baddie sends this silly maid of his disguised as Odete to do the job. After that Derek basically declares his love to the wrong girl, the baddie laughs as the real Odete lies dying and in the end Derek kills the baddie and they live happily ever after.
That is of course until The Swan Princess 2 & 3, however those are for another day. Over all I enjoy this movie. The animation is great, I love all the songs, sure they’re plot holes but this is a sappy love story so what do you expect? Personally I like the couple, they could have been better but they’re not the worst development wise.
