This is a video i created on anti-blackness.

Multiple times I have been forced to endure the constant voice of whiteness and racism that many black college students have to. I’ve been accused of having a black-only scholarship, called the “n-word” or ghetto. Then I was scolded if I reacted violently and told I was backing stereotypes.

Just thought I’d share this charming piece of graffiti from near my home.

By the way, this is the ONLY women’s library in the country, it has only women’s work in it and also serves as a sort of feminist museum. They’re affiliated with a university close by and hold regular events such as workshops and talks on subjects like the poetry of immigrant women of colour or the representation of mental health in women’s literature. Its also due to be closed down by the Conservatives.

Yaoi hit the fan-dom: why it's not the end of the world

There seems to be a fandom wide consensus that if a male x male fanon pairing becomes popular within a certain show then the world stops. Everything and anything that resembles a non-canon gay relationship seems to be handled poorly by both fans and on-lookers alike. Everyone remaining un-involved with the pairing becomes defensive over a childhood show, stating any and all representation of the pairing is offensive at it’s core and that anyone enjoying it should be ashamed.

Here’s why that doesn’t fly with this fan-girl. Many adult themed pairings or works based on childhood cartoons remain in their own tag, folder or site often marked with sensitive material warnings. Most age restricted works are found on websites that shouldn’t be used by children below the age of thirteen i.e. deviantart and tumblr. Even then artists and authors are encouraged to tag things appropriately and/or block things from view where possible. Tumblr itself seems to be particularly engaged in tagging anything considered triggering and most fics of an nsfw rating are hidden under read more.

Enjoying a pairing from a childhood show is not deplorable in and of itself. We, as adults, are allowed to look at the archetypes the characters represent and use our imaginations to create their futures in any sense we want. For example, Kevedd has become popular recently. This is the pairing Kevin x Edd from Ed, Edd and Eddy. Most continuations or explorations of their relationship happen in high school or older, as most people in the fandom prefer to work with older characters who have developed beyond the limitations of the original show. Most of all these artists and authors enjoy the artistic licence of building on what was already there.

There is nothing shameful in this. There is nothing shameful in writing nsfw fanfics of these characters, there is nothing shameful in writing plotless nsfw fanfics of these characters for the sake of your own or others gratification. Why? because plotless smut fics don’t hurt anyone. As long as the fic happens when the characters are older, it’s consensual and it’s not promoting negative stereotypes of gay relationships or abusive sex then there is nothing wrong with smut for the sake of smut.

However, as a fandom we must consider the possibly triggering and harmful behaviours we can promote. To each their own in every pairing, and some of us may be attracted to darker, more adult material but we must always understand and question things that make light of the issues of rape and abuse. These two things are something every fandom suffers from, because our society often romanticises the two in media love stories.

Authors and artists a like will always aim to make angst filled material because it’s dramatic and interesting. Creating reverse AU’s and exploring a character’s deepest, darkest traits will always be a challenge that fans are willing to take on. However, it’s our job to understand when our work has gone from exploring a character’s lows to glamorising a relationship based on abuse and unacceptable behaviour.

It’s only a small part of the fandom that goes too far in most cases but the part that does is usually the part that sticks. The worst part of exploring darker relationships within a child’s cartoon is that it begins to draw away from the original appeal of the pairing and if it strays too far can feel like it’s betraying the source material. We all know that fandom can make complete fluff out of anything or it can make complete heart break. There’s nothing wrong with putting character’s through ordeals, making their live’s not as rosy or even exploring darker themes. As long as the pairing itself does not become detrimental to one of the couple’s health or mentality.

The main complaint that follows yaoi or just male x male non-canon relationships in general is that the genre entails a certain amount of glorified abuse. That being when one member of the pairing is altered in order to appear darker or edgy but ends up being abusive either emotionally or sexually, to a point where the relationship in itself is dangerous for the other party. This is when on-lookers to the fandom begin worrying that the pairings existence is no longer an innocent and overtly acceptable addition to the fandom but rather a dangerous breeding ground for negative stereotypes.

There is a difference between two consenting adults liking it rough and one partner being abusive or controlling to the point of unreasonable force. Again, using Kevedd as an example because of it’s recent popularity, the reverse AU seems to be the biggest area of complaint. As an idea it’s perfectly fine and just fans using their creative licence. However, people have pointed out that Edd’s personality is often changed to that of being abusive rather than caring and that the ‘bully’ persona has been taken too far. We have to understand that the AU is not an unacceptable thing in and of itself, but the increased emphasis on Edd being a manipulative bully who shows little care towards physical boundaries is.

The complaint that you just don’t like people messing with characters is not a viable complaint towards a fandom. What you do and don’t like personally is your problem alone. What is the fandom’s problem is the negative stereotypes and unacceptable behaviour of certain variations of character’s. R!Edd teasing R!Kevin about being cute and eventually standing up for him is adorable. R!Edd beating up R!Kevin or touching him without consent is cause for alarm.

To sum up this point, there is nothing wrong with a fandom being interested in tweaking characters or exploring how these characters could change. Reverse AU’s, gender-swaps and all the like are inevitable and acceptable parts of fandoms and as long as they don’t express fundamentally problematic issues then saying you just don’t like the fandom because of it’s creative licence is your problem, no one else’s. A fandom is always evolving and if there’s no new material coming from a show (i.e. Ed, Edd and Eddy) then fans are allowed to use their imagination to keep the show alive and keep interest in the fandom. It’s not a crime to invent new things based on existing source material and to explore the dynamics of switched roles or personalities. Being a ‘purist’ when it comes to things like fandom is up to you, but you are not better or ‘above’ people who indulge in developing story-lines or spin-off projects based on an original pairing.

Yaoi or non-canon male x male pairings are not the end of the world and though they attract some undesirable aspects (negative stereotypes) they can also be some of the most well written and endearing pieces of work you’ll ever read. It is not our job to condemn any and all pieces of fanon literature and art work just because said artist is not catering to every need you have. It is not the job of artists and authors to bow down to a fandom majority or give up their creative licence because someone on the internet has decided that they would rather have them stick to canon.

It is our job to question imposed stereotypes like apparent ‘receiving’ characters being stripped of any masculine qualities or being made weaker for convenience. For example, Double D being stripped of his naturally sassy, stubborn and verbally forward nature for the sake of him being the ‘bottom’ in the relationship. On the other hand, R!Double D being made excessively aggressive and violent for the sake of becoming the ‘top’ in the relationship.

These pairings are not the end of a fandom, they are not ‘fads’ and they are not fundamentally terrible in every aspect. They are inventive and do not need the approval of every purist in the fandom just to exist. These pairings are a sensitive topic that breeds controversy but we must all be able to tell the difference between disliking creative licence and disliking actual problematic behaviour towards the handling of fictional gay pairings.

Criticism must be handled openly and with acceptance. The fandom must not respond to legitimate concern with close minded defensive anger.

Hate for the sake of hate is different.

This body of work is an exploration of the extent of cultural appropriation and encourages a discussion about it. I give the appropriator and the appropriated the opportunity to defend themselves and create a dialogue between them, while maintaining a neutral stance myself. I am not attacking those who appropriate, merely educating and creating awareness. I’m also exploring appropriation myself, and discovering the carying degrees of it within this visual conversation.
