The loss of Southern Solar is another devastating blow to the UK’s solar industry – Lisa Nandy
Lisa Nandy MP, Labour’s Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, responding to the announcement that Southern Solar has gone into liquidation citing the removal of government support for solar energy schemes. Southern Solar is the third solar energy company in week to make such an announcement following Mark Group and Climate Energy going into administration.
“The loss of Southern Solar is another devastating blow to the UK’s solar industry. With the third solar company to go into administration in just one week, it’s clear the government’s short-sighted cuts to popular solar energy schemes have plunged this industry into a crisis that could easily have been avoided.
“Hundreds of skilled workers are being thrown into unemployment because of the Tories mismanagement of clean energy subsidies. Ministers say they’re cutting solar support to save households 80 pence from their annual energy bills but even these savings may be offset by other handouts they’re giving to more expensive energy projects.
“We need immediate action from the Energy Secretary to save the British solar industry. Today I have written to Amber Rudd asking her to thoroughly reassess government’s approach to solar energy schemes. She must do everything in her power to end this crisis, protect people’s livelihoods and ensure these skilled jobs are kept in the UK.”
